H Street Play Date

A great group of friends and I are planning an all day excursion to H street the first weekend in June. I have to say some of my favorite places to frequent can now be found there. I visited Church and State for the first time several weeks ago. It is easily one of my new favorites. The Church part of the bar embodies pews, stain glass windows and flickering candles. It is like a shrine to great cocktails. The State part focuses on well-made American spirits. Church and State shows off the best of the American craft liquor movement.

Some of my other favorites include Sticky Rice and Little Miss Whiskey's Golden Dollar. I can't wait to try Biergarten Haus and others in a few weeks.

Wailing Guitar Rhythms at the New Vegas Lounge

I finally ventured to the New Vegas Lounge the other week with some girlfriends. The Logan Circle blues bar excels at live music. This is the perfect place to get lost in the melodies of Bill Withers, B.B. King and as the night goes on even Cee-Lo. Next to the stage sits a dance floor where patrons can dance the night away. Just be sure to not arrive before midnight or you may be the only three there. We learned this the hard way.

My amazing and talented friend Jackie just started her own blog. Jackie just moved from the east cost to venture into a daring new life, with her equally as talented photographer boyfriend Mike, on the west coast. While I am quite sad that I have lost my 9:30 club/Cheesetique partner-in-crime I am excited to hear about things happening on the other coast. Jackie has an illustrious film/documentary background. Phillips Collection Grand Reopening--Free Admission

This weekend, the Phillips Collection celebrates it's grand reopening. The Phillips welcomes visitors back to its galleries with a spectacular new installation of masterworks from the permanent collection of Sir Howard Hodgkin's, As Time Goes By (2009). Comprising starbursts of vibrant color, the two 20-foot-long, hand-painted etchings were recently acquired for the Phillips' permanent collection.

Work-of-art birthday cake designs by renowned D.C. pastry chefs inspired by artworks in the Phillips will be on display for this weekend only. The celebration continues in the museum's cafe by FoodArts, where visitors will enjoy complimentary champagne.

Free tours (usually $20 admission) throughout the weekend provide insight into art view.

Crystal City 1K Wine Walk

Lace up your sneakers and cleanse your palette; it’s time to start training for the Crystal City 1K Wine Walk. Presented by the Crystal City Business Improvement District in partnership with the Washington Wine Academy, the 1K Wine Walk promises “racers” the opportunity to taste and learn about between 30-40 wines as they make their way through the shops and interior walkways of Crystal City. On Saturday, February 26th, tasters will have the option of four different hourly heats to choose from (2 PM, 3 PM, 4 PM and 5 PM) before walking and sipping through a series of hydration stations staffed by Washington Wine Academy experts. In addition to great wines, tasters will also have the opportunity to take in photographs on display from finalists and youth category winners from FotoWeek DC before ending up at the “finish festival” in the former food court turned tasting lounge.

My favorite U Street wine bar, Vinoteca, recently opened a back plaza featuring a bocce court and a villa-roofed bar highlighting their extensive wine list. Their offerings of 20 wines by the glass ($5 before 7 p.m.) are paired with an incredible outdoor grill menu. The grill man diligently turns out ricotta crostini and lamb sliders from the outdoor menu. Enjoy!

So, this city gal ventured deep into Alexandria last Friday with friends to practice her two-step at Nick's Nightclub. The nightclub is packed with die-hard country line dancers. Everyone's friendly and the scene is low-key. If you like to dance with strangers and drink your beer out of the bottle, this is the sort of bar for you.

A live country band takes over the front room while the dance floor is packed with people two-stepping and doing the south side shuffle. The regulars are happy to lead you around the dance floor (for those like me who have no clue what they are doing). You will hear great tunes by George Strait and the like all while getting in a good workout. It was a great change of pace!

I have to thank my friend Lauren for finding it and putting together the outing and my friend Jen for coming along and being such a quick study!

One of my favorite D.C. summer activities is Screen on the Green. This year it runs from July 12-August 2cnd. The movie schedule is below. Enjoy!

July 12-Goldfinger. Sean Connery stars as 007 in #003 of the James Bond series. Considered one of the best of all Bonds, it was loosely adapted from Ian Fleming's 1959 novel.

July 19-The Goodbye Girl. Richard Dreyfuss plays Elliot, a struggling New York actor who finds himself saddled with two unwanted roommates.

July 26-12 Angry Men. Henry Fonda is the long holdout on a jury during a murder trial. There are 11 guilty votes but juror #8 thinks their verdict may have been reached in haste.

August 2-Bonnie and Clyde. Meet Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. They rob banks. Explosive crime drama, set during the Depression, follows the Barrow gang's crime sprees from Kansas to Texas.

Now that summer has arrived, there is nothing like relaxing outside with a cold cocktail. D.C. has a great rooftop and terrace scene that heats up in the summertime. Below are some of my favorite offerings in the area:

Bourbon (2348 Wisconsin Ave. NW)

A great neighborhood bar with a wonderful outdoor patio.

Cantina Marina (600 Water Street SW)

The patio and deck offers views right on (make that over) the Washington Channel.

Cleveland Park Bar and Grill (3421 Connecticut Ave. NW)

Another neighborhood gem that offers an open-air deck. Plus, there are four large TVs on the deck so you don't have to miss any sports action.

Galaxy Hut (2711 Wilson Blvd. Arlington, VA)

Not only does Galaxy Hut offer an amazing beer selection; it also has a great summer garden hidden in an alley nudged in between two buildings.

The Gibson (2009 14th Street NW)

My favorite speakeasy offers a laid back vibe in their back patio. Note: reservations are not accepted for the patio. It is first-come, first-served.

Marvin's (2007 14th Street NW)

The Gibson's neighbor offers a great rooftop garden deck which boasts an extensive selection of over 30 Belgian beers. Live music is often featured on the deck.

Poste Moderne Brasserie (555 8th Street NW)

The Hotel Monaco's large historic courtyard has an exorbitant amount of room and all-weather furniture along with it's own cocktail bar.

Nellie's (900 U Street NW)

D.C.'s first gay sports bar is home to one of the best and largest rooftop decks in the city. Nellie's draws a remarkable neighborhood crowd across all genders, races, and sexual orientation.

Public Bar (1214 18th Street NW)

Public Bar's rooftop offers seats, shade and a bar that dispenses cold beers and frozen cocktails. Happy hour, which runs until 8 on the weekdays, features beers for $3 or less.

Lauriol Plaza (1835 18th Street NW)

This popular Mexican place always has a packed patio no matter what day of the week. One trip there and you will understand why.

Vintage Virginia Wine Festival

On Tap and Party DC are hosting their annual bus trip to the Vintage Virginia Wine Festival. The festival is one of the largest wine events on the East Coast and includes unlimited wine tastings from 50 plus wineries, live bands, as well incredible food. The trip is Saturday, June 5th. Inspired by the growing street truck trend, Grau the owner, thought a taco sidewalk stand would be a great new concept. He was right!

AFI Discover Channel Silverdocs brings the best new documentaries to the Washington, DC area Monday, June 21 through Sunday June 27, with the "Best of the Fest" screenings on Monday, June 28. Now it is eighth year, the festival serves as a launch pad for independent documentaries. The festival is considered by many to be the premier documentary film festival in the United States. It has consistently screened documentaries that have gone on to be major award contenders---14 Academy Award nominated films to be exact.

Silverdocs takes place at the AFI Silver Theatre. Volunteers are needed to cover a range of jobs from programming to social media. Those interested in volunteering should e-mail volunteer@silverdocs.com. Volunteers receive free vouchers, to be turned into movie tickets, for every 8 hours worked.

It's Summer Camp for Adults

Brightest Young Things' pool party series returns for another summer of fun! Unfortunately, this year they will not run every week. They will be held on sporadic weekends. So, keep your eyes out for new dates. This year kicks off on Saturday, May 8th with a celebration entitled Ocho, in honor of the Mexican festivities this week. It kicks off at noon (runs to 8 p.m.) and will feature Will Eastman, Chris Burns, Gavin Holland, Fatback DJs, and a mariachi band, as well as a margarita contest, nacho eating contest, and much more madness. Tickets are $15 dollars at the door at the Capitol Skyline Hotel (10 I Street SW).

Minibar: A True Novelty in the District

Last week, I made the fantastic journey into the imagination of Chef Jose Andres. My trip to his exclusive restaurant Minibar, the six seat counter on the second floor of Cafe Atlantico, was well worth the effort and cost involved in securing a seat.

The 27-single bite courses were pure ingenuity. Jose Andres has an incredible way of recreating classics like the Philly cheese steak (picture above) as well as presenting outlandish combinations like the cotton candy eel (picture above). The cotton candy eel, my personal favorite, was wrapped in a shiso leaf, then cocooned in a peppery cotton candy. All the courses created a chorus of "yums" and "wows."

It is difficult to encapcalate how truly amazing the two and a half hour dining experience was. So, I highly suggest you get on the phone start calling now in attempt to get in (with your 30-day-advance notice reservation) and experience it yourself!

Urban Adventure Races in D.C.

Top Chef Season 7 Headed to D.C.

The show is scheduled to film this spring. In the mean time, I will speculate all the places where challenges may occur--Eastern Market, a Jose Andres restaurant, or perhaps the Senate dining room.

The Emerald Isle

I just returned from my brilliant (as the Irish love to say) trip to Ireland. The Ireland I experienced was far removed from the cliche of shamrocks and leprechauns. It was a scenic extravaganza of mountains, farms, and ports that just make your jaw drop. There is a wealth of history to discover there as well. In Belfast, I learned of the remarkable transformation that has been made from the era of the "troubles" to a now cosmopolitan town. There were cultural pleasures too, in the land of Oscar Wilde and Yeats. Dublin, Belfast and Cork all have top-notch restaurants, pubs for miles, and great live music. It was an incredible trip and definitely the best place to be to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

'Quila Time

Oyamel (401 7th Street) celebrates its Tequila and Mezcal Festival with a complimentary tasting of Siembra Azul's small batch tequila every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4-6 p.m. The festival runs through March 14th . Oyamel chef Joe Raffa will cook dishes incorporating the spirit's flavors, including tequila-marinated pork belly and scallop ceviche with tequila and blood orange.

Parking Meter Special at Acadiana

Starting February 21st, Acadiana will offer 25-cent cajun bloody marys and blood orange mimosas during their prix-fixe New Orelans style Sunday brunch (which features live jazz). Their brunch, which was previously $32 will also be reduced to $29. According to the Washington Post Going Out Guru's, the restaurant is calling it the parking meter special, a dig at the city's new $2-per-hour parking rates.

I am now enjoying my third day sans work due to the inclement weather. I have to admit that I am going a bit stir crazy though. Luckily, another organized snowball fight is occurring today at 2:00 p.m. at Dupont Circle. I was so sad I missed the first one. So, if I can dig my way out of my house I will be there. As if the snowball fight wasn't enough temptation---Bar Dupont (1500 New Hampshire Ave NW) is opening their ice bar. It is a fully serviced outdoor ice bar on their outdoor terrace. While this site does not directly deal with anything D.C. related it is a good place to pick up a dress to wear to a great D.C. event. Owner of Sunday Brunch Dress Shop, Judy Kou, hand selects a top host of contemporary designers including one of my favorites Lorick. The price range is around $300 to $500, which if I forgo a few Sunday brunches I can afford these amazing dresses. The site was created last year and somehow I am just stumbling upon it now. Haiti Earthquake: How to help

Many D.C. yoga studios continue to host benefit classes for Partners in Health for emergency medical work on the ground in Haiti. Additionally, the Haitian Embassy (2311 Mass. Ave NW) continues to hold public vigils. There are still many ways to help both in D.C. and outside of the district. The Washington Post has illustrated a variety of ways on their website. Please see below.

You can donate to The Salvation Army's efforts in Haiti by calling 800-SAL-ARMY (725-2769) or visiting their Web site and designating that your donation is for the Haiti earthquake.

The U.N. World Food Program is accepting donations. Head of the WFP Josette Sheeran said the agency is deploying its resources in Haiti, including 86 metric tons of food. You can donate here.

Save the Children is responding with food, water and shelter, as well as establishing Child Friendly Spaces that give children a place to play and recover. Make donations online or by phone 1-800-728-3843.

National Nurses United has issued a call for nurse volunteers to provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

DC Short Films: "Best of the Fest"

The DC Shorts Film Festival is Washington's only film festival dedicated to showcasing and discussing short films from around the world. The festival was held in September and the winners were chosen by audience members and the DC Shorts Film Festival Director. If you know me, you know I love Ohio. With that said, I could not be any more elated that one of my favorite Ohio staples, Great Lakes Brewery, is making it's way to the district. ChurchKey is welcoming Great Lakes Brewing Company of Cleveland, Ohio tomorrow night (January 12)when brewery representatives will be on hand to pour all 5 of their year-round brews on draught. They will be handing out Great Lakes glassware as well! Great Lakes will also debut at RFD on Wednesday, January 13.

Chocolatier Takes on Wine

ACKC is now a chocolatier and wine bar, having just received its liquor license from the city. The store, at 1529 14th Street is advertising “nightly wine and chocolate pairings.” As you may remember from earlier blog posts found here; ACKC also has great truffle making classes.

The 14th street area is really blossoming with the new additions of Cork Market & Tasting Room , Masa 14, ChurchKey and Homemade Pizza (which opens on the 21st).

Good Taste Comes to Clarendon

Screwtop is a lovely albeit narrow new wine bar in Clarendon. The pours are decently priced and the bottle list is impressive. The staff and atmosphere are both inviting. Screwtop serves tasty and well matched small plates. Screwtop also maintains a well stocked wine shop. The owner, Wendy Buckley, left her six-figure a year job to start Screwtop. She worked briefly at Cheesetique in the Del Ray neighborhood to gain experience in the wine industry. The owner of Cheesetique, Jill Erber, was kind enough to give her consultation and advice. As I have mentioned before on my blog--Cheesetique is one of my favorite wine bars in the area. So, seeking Jill Erber's advice was definitely a good strategy.

2010 Resolutions

The New Year is coming soon, which means its time to begin thinking about your New Year's resolutions. With 2010 just around the corner, I thought I would share my resolutions that some of you may also consider doing. And they are: 1) Learn Italian. I am beginning classes the week of January 10 at the Casa Italiana Language School. I can't wait! 2) Find a new fitness program. While I love running and will never give up my long runs---it is fair to say that I have reached the dreaded plateau. I am exploring Potomac Cross Fit or LA Boxing both in my Clarendon neighborhood as supplementary workout options. I also want to take more yoga classes. 3) Plan a trip abroad for 2011. This March, I am headed to Ireland. I would love to plan a trip for 2011 as well (hopefully to Argentina and Chile). 4) Have fresh flowers in my apartment at all times. My mom is a florist so we always had fresh flowers everywhere growing up. I want to continue that in my home. 5) Volunteer more often. DC CARES holds orientations so you can find volunteer opportunities that fit your schedule and interests. I am attending the orientation on January 12. 6) Take a financial planning class. I am terrible with saving my money and great at spending it (see resolution 1,2,3 and 4). I also have a very limited understanding about investing. So, I need to learn more so I can become a bit more savvy with my very limited savings.

Six resolutions may be a bit lofty of a goal; however, I think these are all doable. Here is to finding your resolutions. Have a safe News Years and a prosperous and creative 2010!

Author of Best Seller Eat, Pray, Love to Speak at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue

I was elated to find out a few weeks ago that one of my favorite books was being brought to the big screen. Eat, Pray, Love will air in early 2010. Elizabeth Gilbert's travelogue of spiritual seeking is truly an inspiration to all readers to find what they really want out of life.

At the end of her bestselling memoir Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who'd been living in Indonesia when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever under any circumstances get legally married. (Both were survivors of previous horrific divorces. Enough said.) But providence intervened one day in the form of the United States government, which-after unexpectedly detaining Felipe at the America border crossing-gave the couple a choice: they could either get married, or Felipe would never be allowed to enter the country.

These new developments lead Gilbert to her most recent book titled “Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace With Marriage,” the book is a memoir of a tumultuous year that came 18 months after “Eat, Pray, Love” leaves off, as well as a meditation on wedlock.

So, I am tremendously behind on my blog. I greatly apologize! I didn't think anyone even noticed until Lizzi sent me a note stating how much she missed my D.C. updates. Who knew? I blame a variety of factors 1) cosmetic tax/health reform which dominated my last four weeks at ASPS; 2) the start of a new job this week which has required some very late nights; and 3) a virus that is plaguing my little laptop. Anyways, I will try not to leave all of you (ok probably all 5 of you) in the dark anymore.

So, today because of lack of time (see 3 points above) I am sampling from a great Roll Call article I read today. Hopefully, it will inspire you to find some creative gifts. If nothing else, it reminded me that I need to buy my White House Christmas ornament this week. Please see below.

At other places around town, there’s no lack of political gifts available for last-minute shoppers.

• At the Trover Shop (1270 F St. NW), store manager Steve Shuman said, “Our hottest new ornament is the President Obama ornament that plays a portion of his acceptance speech.” The ornament is $20, but customers who buy one get the second one free. Shuman also pointed out the Obama bobblehead ($19.95) and 550-piece Obama puzzle ($16.95) are also among their popular political gifts.

• The Woodrow Wilson House (2340 S St. NW) offers a “Presidential Cookies” cookbook by Bev Young that contains 64 cookie recipes of U.S. presidents ($23.95). Additionally, shoppers can add to their tree-trimming collection the Woodrow Wilson ornament designed with a 24-karat gold finish and fine porcelain ($23).

• President Lincoln’s Cottage at the Soldier’s Home sells an ornamental rendition of Lincoln’s summer retreat ($23.95) as well as a portrait ornament of President Abraham Lincoln ($13.95).

• The Sewall-Belmont House and Museum (144 Constitution Ave. NE), which is the headquarters of the historic National Woman’s Party, offers a jail door pendant and pin, based on pins the party gave out to about 100 women in 1919 who had been jailed for their suffragist protests ($15.95 for the pewter pin; $39.95 for silver).

• At the Capitol, visitors can stop by the Senate Gift Shop and pick up a four-piece 1994-1997 official Congressional holiday ornament set for $25. The official 2009 ornament is $10 and 1997-2005 ornaments are $5. Another interesting item is the soap trios gift set that includes three bars of soap each with a picture of a donkey, elephant or eagle ($15).

• The Capitol Visitor Center’s gift shop carries many of the same official Congressional ornaments along with the gold-plated Capitol Dome ornament ($21). Additionally, the United States Capitol Historical Society has its collection of political ornaments on display: Lincoln, the signing of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence ($18). Items can also be purchased directly on the historical society’s online gift shop, such as the 2009 West Front and tree ornament ($24) and the 2010 “We the people” calendar ($9.95).

For those stuck at their desks, online shopping is an option.

• Capitolshoppingmall.com offers snow globes of the White House and the Capitol ($14.50). Its ornament collection runs from the White House to other government agencies. For example, the Secret Service holiday ornament for 2009 ($24) features a three-dimensional replica of the Lincoln Memorial statue commemorating the bicentennial birthday of Lincoln. The online store sells more than 20 different ornaments, such as the Air Force One 2006 Secret Service ornament ($24), the 2005 Eisenhower Executive Office Building ornament ($24), the World War II Memorial ornament ($21), the Declaration of Independence ornament and the Constitution ornament ($17.50).

• Politicalgifts.com boasts of its offering “unique gifts for any occasion.” The Web site has gifts for Democrats and Republicans. But if you are looking to collect all the official White House ornaments dating back to 1999, this is the place to go. If gag gifts are also on the list, the site offers a Hillary Rodham Clinton nutcracker doll and Bill Clinton corkscrew ($29.95).

Last month, I blogged about Zola Wine & Kitchen cooking classes. I took the pumpkin class last night with co-workers. We made a delectable pumpkin soup and pie. It was a great class and I highly recommend any of their classes to anyone looking to learn new recipes and enjoy a unique night out. To read my previous blog about the Zola Kitchen, visit here.

I also learned last night, from my friend Betsy, of another great education class in the D.C. area. Dino in Cleveland Park hosts a wine tasting class twice a month. For a mere $25 dollars you can enjoy 6 tastings and 4 appetizers! Betsy had wonderful things to say about the class. I am taking my Uncorked Thursdays wine club there next month. We are taking the Introduction to Italy: the South on December 2cnd. It should be a great time!

My boss also informed me of another great place to enjoy FREE tastings and seminars--The Curious Grape in Shirlington. I have yet to attend; however, I am planning my first trip in the very near furture.

NYC Edge Comes to D.C.

Hotel Washington was always a place I would take out of town guests to observe the amazing panoramic view of the National Mall from their rooftop bar. Right before making our way up the elevator, I would always explain to friends that the drinks were overpriced, the food was awful, and the service was poor. However, the view made up for all of it!

Now, I can return to the same site with friends and enjoy the roof top terrace all year around---this time with excellent service and incredible food options. The new W Hotel, took over the historic Hotel Washington, which opened in 1917. The W turned the famed rooftop into a modern cocktail lounge. The cocktails can also be ordered in the Living Room, W's design of the traditional hotel lobby. Dining options include the J&G Steakhouse and Wine Bar from Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The rooftop is heated, so patrons may enjoy the view throughout the seasons. The great view comes at a price, long waits for a seat. Be sure to make a reservation. Washington Christmas Tradition Joins the 21st Century

So, I hate to be rushed through the holidays. I especially hate to see Christmas decorations up during Halloween. However, if I have a chance to win tickets to the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony this week, I am willing to acknowledge Christmas a bit early. The National Park Service will hold an online lottery this week to distribute tickets for the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony in December. The lottery opens at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday and runs through 11:59 p.m. on Friday. Nearly 10,000 free tickets will be distributed, including 7,000 standing-room tickets for the first time. The tree lighting is scheduled for Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. on the Ellipse near the White House. This is the first time an online lottery has been used for ticket distribution. Logan Circle: The New Hot Spot

In the past, the only time I would trek over to Logan Circle was 1) to visit my friend Allison 2) to go to Cork Wine Bar or 3) to visit ACKC for a truffle demonstration class. Typically, I bypass this quaint neighborhood and head straight to Dupont Circle or U Street. However, times have changed. On Thursday, the much anticipated duel project, Birch & Barley and ChurchKey opened on 14th Street in Logan Circle. Enter 1337 14th Street and you are presented with a choice; remain on the main floor to frequent Birch & Barley, or proceed up the stairs to the ChurchKey bar. This is the first restaurant in D.C. for the Neighborhood Restaurant Group, who own EatBar (see earlier blog this week about EatBar here) Rustico, and The Evening Star Cafe, just to name a few. At Birch & Barley you will find large plates that will not disappoint. After dinner, you can head to ChurchKey for a vast selection of beers (555 to be exact) or just start dinner there and enjoy their light American fare.

To add even more options, my friend Jeffrey informed me yesterday that the owners of one of my favorite restaurants Zengo opened a restaurant in Logan Circle as well. Masa 14 (1825 14th Street) offers the same great combination of Latin/Asian flavors that Zengo does; however, in small plates. I just made a reservation today for next weekend. I can't wait to try this little gem and then follow it with drinks from ChurchKey.

Perfect Combination: Eggs and Queens

Since, I have drag queens on the brain--I thought I would post about one of the most notable brunches in D.C.---Perry's Drag Queen Brunch. My friend Jaime and her boyfriend are coming in town next weekend for Halloween and she requested that we add this to our weekend to-do-list. I took Jaime to this gender-bending brunch the last time she was in town. It must have been a rememberable experience, because she wants to go again.

At Perry's you dine on the great buffet breakfast featuring everything from omelets to sushi and then every few minutes you are entertained by a bevy of drag queen's. Pull out some singles and your camera, and they are more than happy to pose for some entertaining pictures – especially if it involves embarrassing someone at your table! This popular Sunday event has a 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. seating time, and they don’t take reservations, so you’ll want to get there at least 30 minutes beforehand if you want to be sure to get a table. It’s a bit pricey for brunch, and mimosas and bloody marys are not included, but the drag queens are priceless.

Ready-Set-Drag!

So, it is no secret that I am obsessed with Halloween (and drag queens for that matter). The best way to kick off the upcoming week's Halloween festivities is with one of D.C.'s best Halloween traditions---the annual High Heel Drag Queen Race.

On Tuesday, October 27th, the Dupont Circle bar J.R's will host it's annual race on 17th Street between P and S streets. The event attracts thousands of spectators each year and features costumed drag queens that show off their elaborate outfits and race down 17th Street in high heels. The race begins at 9 pm, and only lasts 15 minutes. However, if you want a good seat be sure to be there no later than 6 pm. I highly recommend watching from Jack's (1527 17th Street). On Tuesday's they feature half off all of their wine bottles.

Slam-Dunk Documentary

I am headed to New York this weekend; however, upon my return I will certainly be viewing More Than A Game. I am reposting the e-mail below from my friend Jackie (also an Ohio native, who attended LeBron's rival high school) detailing the movie as well as locations in the area to view it. I am happy to announce that the film MORE THAN A GAME premieres in DC theaters starting today, Friday, October 16.

More Than A Game was written and directed by a family friend of mine, Kris Bellman, who spent close to 7 years making the film. It was picked up by Lionsgate and sponsored by Nike and the rest is history. We can all relate to putting your heart, time and money into making and telling an incredible story. It is a huge accomplishment for Kris and I hope you all can see it!

More Than A Game is a feature documentary film about a certain basketball player from my home town- you might have heard of him...LeBron James. The film chronicles his journey, along with four of his friends and teammates, from playing little league b-ball in inner-city Cleveland to the NBA. I had the privilege of watching these 5 men play a little while I was in high-school and not only was their talent remarkable, but their story of friendship is inspirational! The film highlights their friendship throughout the years, so even if you don't like basketball, you can enjoy this film.

I finally found my new Bourbon. Bourbon was my favorite neighborhood bar/restaurant in Glover Park. Now, that I have made the move to Virgina I never thought I would find something comparable in my new Clarendon neighborhood. However, last Friday I made my way to a great neighborhood gem just a bit off the beaten path. EatBar is my new Bourbon. I may venture to say that it is even better. EatBar is located in a very unassuming area on Washington Boulevard just about 6 blocks from the Clarendon metro. EatBar is a cozy gathering gastropub with over 400 bottles of wine, 70 -by-the glass options, seasonal cocktails and an impressive menu of small plates. Steve and I split a burger and mussels. Both were incredible.

On Sunday nights, EatBar hosts movie nights. At 8 p.m. come to EatBar to enjoy a great movie and free consessions. This Sunday's movie is The Princess Bride. I am off to Chicago this weekend to run the Chicago Marathon. So, while I am running 26.2 miles, I hope you all remember to take advantage of the Taste of Georgetown this weekend! The Taste is Saturday, October 10 from 11-4. You can sample dishes from some of Georgetown's finest- Hook, MienYu, Neyla and Georgetown Cupcake, to name just a few!

If you are looking to burn some calories after tasting all those great dishes--I highly recommend taking part in one of the Washington Walks haunted tours. My mom and I did the "Most Haunted Houses Tour" during one of her visits to D.C. and it was a lot of fun. The tour is concentrated in Lafayette Park. You’ll see the home of navy hero Stephen Decatur, hear about Henry Adams and his troubled wife Clover, and relive the night of April 14, 1865 when the grim reaper stalked more than Abraham Lincoln.

Music Round-Up

My trip to Del Ray this past weekend reminded me of a D.C. area must-do (that I need to do). The Del Ray area is home to the Birchmere, a legendary music hall and bar. I am told you will always find great music here, often by top names. Nanci Griffith is performing there this weekend. Doors at 7:30 p.m. both nights, tickets still available at $39.50. Aside from taking in great folk/bluegrass music you can also enjoy the Birchmere's pool hall and their famous brewery.

Also this weekend, my favorite music hall of all time, 9:30 Club, is hosting the Bravery. They play the 9:30 Club on Sunday with Living Things and The Dustys. $25, doors at 7 p.m.

Art on the Avenue

Jackie and I enjoyed the Art on the Avenue festival in Del Ray yesterday. The festival featured musical entertainment and food from around the world; however, the art vendors stole the show and one art vendor's work stole my heart--Amy Bruce Imagery. Amy's digital collection not only captures her travels but also has the ability to make you feel like you were right there with her. Her portfolio covers New York, Italy and New Mexico. Her collection will continue to expand as her travels do. I purchased a great piece Amy took while in Rome. I can't wait to frame it! Politics & Prose is a staple in D.C. It offers a wide selection of novels and literary nonfiction as well as provocative author readings almost every night, this bookstore-coffeehouse is the quintessential D.C. local business. A couple of the upcoming events that I am eagerly looking forward to are:

Monday, October 5th-- Congressman Barney Frank and author Stuart Weisberg will discuss their highly anticipated political biography, Barney Frank: The Story of America’s Only Left-Handed, Gay, Jewish Congressman. The book covers everything from Frank’s working-class childhood and years at Harvard, to Boston politics and his rise as one of the most influential legislators in Washington . This event will be held at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue, which has a partnership with Politics & Prose.

Wednesday, October 7th--Michael J. Sandel--Justice--Professor Sandel’s course on justice is one of the most popular at Harvard. He explores with his students questions such as: what are our obligations to others as people in a free society? Should government tax the rich to help the poor? Is the free market fair? Is it sometimes wrong to tell the truth? Is killing sometimes morally required? Is it possible, or desirable, to legislate morality? Do individual rights and the common good conflict? Sandel believes that philosophy can help us make sense of politics, morality, and our own convictions. I have to share my good friend Coop's response to yesterday's blog posting about my wine club:

So, I have grown up a bit from my OU days or should I say first Homecoming back (since this is when I stayed with Coop); however, I still do crave Pita Pit!

Anyways, the first wine club event for our "Uncorked Wednesdays" club was a lot of fun. These are the great bottles of pinor noir we tried, in case you are feeling in the mood for a good bottle of red tonight. All the wines were purchased at local Whole Foods, Best Cellars, and Trader Joes.

So, I have decided to start a wine club. Tonight is our first event! I figued my friends were more inclined to join a wine club than a book club. I am hosting the event at my house and all guests were asked to bring their favorite bottle of pinor noir (from any region) under $20. I will provide some great cruidite, a perfect bottle of pinor noir from my favorite wine store Best Cellars, and enjoy a night with great friends. We will have to strategize about our future events and themes. So, it seemed perfect timing that I recieved this e-mail from City Shop Girl today adverstiting GoBYO.com which provides details on which restaurants charge corkage fees in Washington, D.C. and 9 other major cities. The website states that you can enjoy no corkage fee at restaurants like Clyde's in Georgetown, Smith&Wollensky, and Cafe Romeo's (Glover Park). Several others charge less than $10 for corkage. Enjoy!

Whirlwind Trip to NYC

Last Friday, I took a quick 24-hour trip to New York to visit Leigh and Steph. I spent just the night in New York so I could return in just enough time for a wedding in D.C. Saturday evening. I started my trip by meeting my friend Ryan for a cup of joe and then a glass of vino at the newly opened Ace Hotel which is home to Stumptown Coffee. The atmosphere of Stumptown was great. It has a feel of the early 1900's meeting the 21st century. The baristas adorned fedoras and vests but utilized sleek and modern coffee machines. After ordering my delicious cappuccino, I made my way to the lobby of Ace Hotel which housed hotel guests, NYC bloggers, and those in need for a day time drink from the Ace Hotel bar (which ended up being Ryan and I after we drank our coffees).

I then met up with Steph and Leigh, after some much needed catching up, we made our way to Kuma Inn for dinner. The restaurant itself is cozy and dimly lit, with exposed bulbs dangling from the ceiling. The owners are still waiting on a liquor license, so it was BYOB for us. Which worked out great as Stephanie had copious amounts of red wine for us to take to dinner. The menu at Kuma Inn is mostly tapas-style small plates. Everything comes out as soon as it’s ready, one of the most memorable dishes was a paella with incredible seafood. Every dish we had was completely satisfying. We closed the night with a night cap at Murphy's Pub on 2cnd Ave. It was a great quick trip to New York with great friends. I can't wait to come back for a full weekend in just a few short weeks!

Unique Wedding Gift Idea

This past weekend I went to Becky and Scott's wedding. I had a wonderful time and Becky looked incredible. This was my third wedding this month! So, as you can imagine I have gotten pretty good at gift giving. I found great bride/groom luggage tags as add-on gifts. I also discovered that Macy's allows you to upload a picture of the couple to serve as the front of the gift card. I also found some great monogrammed items from Dabney Lee. However, this little gem the monogrammed address stamp I found a little too late. So, which every lucky friend gets married next may be getting this. The custom address stamp can be found from Sweet Papery on Etsy. Just a thought for those embarking on a busy wedding season.

Little Ethiopia—a stretch along Ninth and U streets, Northwest—is thriving. My favorite restaurant in the neighborhood is Etete where you can share platters of spicy stews or take part in a traditional, incense-perfumed coffee ceremony. D.C. with its 200,000 people of Ethiopian descent, has the largest Ethiopian population outside of the country itself, according to an unofficial estimate by the embassy.

Cheesetique in Del Ray is a cheese shop/wine cafe and a slice of heaven for the cheese/wine-obsessed (like me). At the front, is a glass case filled with more than 200 varieties of cheese. The front also provides an amazing selection of wine for purchase by the bottle as well as adorable wine and cheese accessories (e.g. cutting boards, cheese labels, etc.). At the back, you can sample a wide selection of incredible wines plus nibble on salads, sandwiches and charcuterie all accented with some kind of cheese. Also worth noting, if you love a glass that you try at the back bar you recieve a 20% discount off the full bottle to take home with you.

If the discount, shop and bar were not enough, Cheesetique offers cheese and wine classes. Most recently, my friend Jackie and I participated in an Orgeon wine tasting class. We plan on making our way back to Cheesetique next Saturday. We just can't get enough. If you visit, I assure you that you will not be able to either!

Nothing says autumn like some spectacular festivals. Luckily, there is a wide variety to choose from! Below is your guide to some upcoming festivals in the area.

Food and Wine Taste of Georgetown is October 10. The food-and-wine event brings out more than two dozen restaurants providing samples of dishes. Tastes are $5 each; bracelets for the wine pavilion are $10. Blues Alley will set the mood with jazz performances. The festival runs from 11 to 4 along Wisconsin Avenue between.

Taste of Bethesda is October 3 from 11 to 4, with more than 50 restaurants offering samples of dishes. There’ll also be live music and performances on four stages plus activities and giveaways for kids. Free admission; tasting tickets sold in booklets of four for $5. The event takes place along Norfolk, Fairmont, St. Elmo, Cordell, and Del Ray avenues.

The Mount Vernon Wine Festival and Sunset Tour is October 2 through 4. Colonial-garbed guides will share history and take visitors into the estate’s cellar, where the first president stored his wine in brick vaults. Food such as fruit-and-cheese boxes, sandwiches, and desserts will be available for purchase. Admission is $30.

The Old Town Food and Wine Festival is October 10th. Local restaurants will serve meals paired with Virginia wines, a tasting room with all participating wineries will be set up at the Holiday Inn on First Street, and there’ll be a series of cooking and wine seminars. Tickets to the festival, which include a pass to the tasting room, are $30 in advance and $35 at the event.

Who Needs Fashion Week When There are Films to Watch

Fashion Week--who needs it! Ok, so I am super jealous and desperately wish I was sitting front row at a Tuleh show in New York right now. However, I will enjoy a different week here in the District--- Short Film Festival Week! September 10-17 is the DC Shorts Film Festival. DC Shorts has been named by MovieMaker Magazine as “one of the nation’s leading short film festivals.” 100 films will be shown in 10 rotating showcases. The lineup includes both local films and movies from 16 different countries. The week culminates with the special “Best of DC Shorts” screenings on Thursday, September 17. All films are shown at the historical E. Street Cinema and U.S. Navy Memorial Theater.

Arts on Foot Festival

One of my favorite end of summer events---Arts on Foot Festival is taking place this week. The event takes place in Penn Quarter tomorrow through Saturday the 12th. The festival features artists booths, downtown restaurants sampling their fare and live dance/music on the two stages that will grace F Street. The art market runs on the sidewalks on Thursday and Friday from 11 am to 7 pm and then F Street gets taken over on Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm.

The following restaurants are participating: 701 Restaurant, Agraria Farmers & Fishers, Asia Nine Bar & Lounge, Austin Grill, Café Atlántico, Clyde’s of Gallery Place, Co Co. On F Street by Harman Hall, numerous vineyards are offering samples and sommeliers will conduct wine seminars all day for a one-time entry fee.

I have three weddings this month. I leave tomorrow to Indiana for the wedding of a very close childhood friend of Steve. Then two weeks later one of my closest friends from OU, Lizzi, is getting married in the great OH. I am so excited and honored to be a bridesmaid and share in her special day. These upcoming events have led me to take a departure from usual blog posts about all things D.C. and share a great week worth of editorials from one of my favorite blog sites, A Cup Of Jo. Cork Just Got Better

Cork, one of my favorite wine bars, is opening a market and tasting room after the Labor Day holiday. If you have not yet frequented Cork, I highly recommend you do. It's the perfect culmination of Spanish/Italian small plates with a French twist on the wine list. Cork offers at least 50 wines by the glass and 160 bottles from small producers around the world. So, you can understand my excitement about the market and tasting room being built across the street from their current location. Cork will be celebraing wine all month, starting on September 14th, with a winemaker tasting from one of their favorite Italian producers - Colterenzio.

I Never Met a Martini I Didn't Like

H. H. Leonards Spero, who Rosa Parks called her daughter, operates an incredible Victorian property on O. Street in Dupont Circle. The Mansion on O Street is made up of five interconnecting town houses. It's a museum, an event space, a private club, a hotel, and easily one of the most incredible places in D.C. The decor throughout encompasses a whimsical jumble of antiques and artworks from around the world, and everything you see is for sale (including a guitar signed by former guest Eric Clapton). The Mansion hosts a variety of events from jazz brunches, lunches and teas. One of my favorite events is the Monday "O-Dinnertini" events. This blog is not intended to be political in any nature as I would like to reserve that for my profession and not upset any of my readers with my political views. However, I felt that an exception should be made in the case of honoring one of my political heroes. The passing of Ted Kennedy will leave a tremendous void in the Senate. I have revered Senator Kennedy for his tremendous passion for social justice and improving the lives of working Americans. Further, his work and commitment to improving our nation's health care was unparalleled. I could go on and on; however, I know you have all been saturated in lofty tributes to the Senator already.

My primary impetus for this entry is to notify everyone of a tremendous way to honor Senator Kennedy's legacy. The Kennedy family has asked that in lieu of flowers, etc that donations be made to the Edward Kennedy Institute. The Institute is dedicated to educating the general public, students, teachers, new Senators, and Senate staff about the role and importance of the Senate. According to the website the Institute hosts a "Summer Senate" for high school students. Two students from each state will come to the Institute each year to study a topic, hold mock hearings, draft legislation, and debate the topic. Educational programs for college students will emphasize an interdisciplinary approach to the study of government, through guest faculty and speakers from many organizations and sectors.

For nearly 50 years, Senator Kennedy served the Senate with great acts. Contributing to the Edward Kennedy Insistute would be a perfect way to perform your own great act.

TGIF--Jazz in the Garden

So, tonight may not be the best day to enjoy Jazz in the Garden as it is 150 degrees here! However, if you don't mind the heat--- make your way down to the Smithsonian Sculpture Garden (700 Constitution Ave.) for a live jazz concert after work. You can enjoy the smooth sounds of jazz as you lounge by the fountain at the National Gallery of Art's Sculpture Garden. It's a great scene. Make sure to get there early, as lawn spots are taken up right around 5/5:30 p.m. You can bring your own picnic basket or order wine and food from any of the many pavilion bars. Also, you can avoid the lines and pre-order picnic baskets filled with fruit, wine and assorted cheeses here. The 2009 schedule includes: Robert Boguslaw (jazz pianist), August 21 Tom Williams (jazz trumpeter), August 28 Phil Mathieu (jazz guitar), September 4 Robert Redd (jazz pianist) followed by U.S. Navy Commodores (big-band jazz) on September 11.

Jen, Allison (pictured here) and I headed to Wasabi yesterday for happy hour. My friend Jackie swears by this place, so I had to check it out. They serve almost everything they make on a long conveyor belt that passes before diners sitting inches away from it. The dining format is known as kaiten-sushi (rotating sushi), and it's commonplace in Japan. Patrons help themselves to whatever strikes their fancy, and they can keep track of their spending by looking at the color of the rings on the plates, yellow being the least expensive at $2, violet the most at $5. To top it all off, Wasabi offers half off all their beer, wine and cocktails from 5-7 p.m. every day.

Deal of the Day: Free Wine and Cheese Tasting

I have contemplated starting a wine club with my D.C. friends. My friend Emily has a club in Cincinnati that she meets with monthly and I am so envious. If the idea ever takes off the ground here, I think the first place I will take my new club is Cowgirl Creamery. From 4-6 p.m. every Thursday and Friday they have a complimentary beer, cheese and wine tastings. Thursday features beer and cheese pairings while Friday is reserved for wine and cheese. They also carry over 200 artisan cheeses. Definitely a reason to sneak out of work early!

Cupcakes--My New Bite Sized Obsession

The new cupcake trend is taking over my wallet and my waist line. I have spent the last week in my home state of Ohio and noticed that my east coast indulgence has now spread to the Midwest. When in Cleveland, Jen, Dean and I traveled to Tremont for the Tremont Art Walk and dinner at Lolita. I would be remiss if I did not mention that you must go to both if you live in the Cleveland area. When walking around we stumbled upon A Cookie & A Cupcake. We decided it was imperative to have dessert before dinner. Their choices range from apple to espresso. I had the strawberry cupcake with chunks of fresh strawberry inside. It was absolutely delicious!

I was presented by another wonderful cupcake the next night at Lizzi's bachelorette party. We had some vino and snacks before painting the town red. One of those great snacks were mini lemon and mint cupcakes (pictured here) from the Cleveland Cupcake Factory. They were probably one of the best cupcakes I have ever had and goodness I have had many. They have the most extensive menu I have ever seen (including Mexican hot chocolate cupcakes and berry lemonade cupcakes) and you can even build your own cupcake with any flavor profile you can think of. They provide free delivery in the Cleveland area.

To complete my sugar overload, I visited Baked & Wired in D.C. for the first time yesterday. I had a decadent strawberry cupcake. It was perfectly moist and also had fresh strawberries in it. To top off the cupcake, I had one of the best chai tea lattes I have ever had. Needless to say, I will be making a return trip. I will also be going for a very long run to burn off all these cupcake calories!

Yesterday, my friend Geoff was telling me about a wine bar his friends are opening in Columbia Heights. Then today it popped up in my e-mail from Thrillist DC. As a lover of all things wine, this place looks incredible. It opens for business on Monday, August 10th. From what I have read so far, it looks like it has a great aesthetic.
